Speaking and teaching Mi’kmaq language, preparing traditional Mi’kmaq foods and singing Mi’kmaq songs

Walter (Wally) Denny is a respected Mi’kmaq knowledge keeper, former addictions counselor, and retired RCMP officer dedicated to supporting his community and preserving Mi’kmaq culture. As a member of the Mi’kmaq Grand Council and a prayer leader, he shares cultural teachings rooted in spirituality, language, and land based practices, while also bringing people together through his long running catering business, Jown’s Catering.

He shares traditional knowledge through hands on teaching, guiding others in cultural skills, storytelling, and treaty understanding. Under the guidance of Elder Roger Stevens, he provides Mi’kmaq Sweats for youth, women, and men and leads supervised medicine walks to Kluskap Cave. His work reflects a deep commitment to passing on Mi’kmaq teachings and strengthening connections between generations in meaningful and practical ways.

He leads prayers and ceremony, sings Mi’kmaw hymns, and teaches the language while also sharing his deep knowledge of traditional foods. Through Jown’s Catering, with over 20 years of experience, he prepares and shares traditional Mi’kmaq meals, offering cultural experiences that bring together food, storytelling, and tradition.

“I share my knowledge through food, song and storytelling” – Wally
