Jade Sark

Jade Sark is a Mi’kmaw artist from We’koqma’q First Nation in Cape Breton, currently based in Kjipuktuk (Halifax), and the founder of Negemow Roots. The business is named in honour of her grandparents’ former shop, The Negemow Basket Shop, continuing a family legacy rooted in Mi’kmaw basketry.

A fourth-generation basket weaver, Jade was first taught by her mother, Cynthia Googoo, and created her first basket at the age of 14. Since moving away from her home in We’koqma’q, she has been actively practicing basket weaving, a journey that has strengthened her connection to her roots. Her work includes traditional and contemporary baskets crafted from black ash wood, often incorporating sweetgrass, birchbark, and wood-burned designs, as well as paintings and other handcrafted pieces.

Through Negemow Roots, Jade also creates contemporary items such as basket earrings and printed designs, bringing Mi’kmaw art into everyday spaces in accessible ways. She shares her knowledge through workshops and live demonstrations at vendor events, engaging with both locals and visitors while educating others about the history and significance of Mi’kmaw basketry.

Jade is passionate about honouring her heritage and continuing her family’s tradition. She is especially proud of creating spaces through her workshops that foster connection, storytelling, and community, while ensuring that Mi’kmaw basketry continues to grow and thrive for future generations.
