De-Anne Sack

Crafting ribbon skirts, working with metal and glass, and sharing cultural knowledge through art.

A Mi’kmaw metalsmith and cultural artisan from Sipekne’katik, Nova Scotia, De-Anne Sack’s creative practice is deeply rooted in ancestral knowledge, nature, and ceremony. She blends traditional teachings with contemporary materials, reflecting a deep respect for Mi’kmaw culture while exploring new ways to share that knowledge through art.

De-Anne’s handcrafted jewelry and art pieces are both unique and classic—rooted in Mi’kmaw tradition and carried forward through her use of natural materials and sacred symbols. She is skilled in metalsmithing, stained glass, ribbon skirt design and appliqué, and quillwork—each medium offering a different way to express Mi’kmaw identity and pass on cultural teachings. With each creation, De-Anne embraces the balance between beauty, tradition, and identity.

Inspired by the stories of her ancestors and the elegance of the Mi’kmaw Double Curve motif, De-Anne often incorporates petroglyph-inspired designs into her work. These ancient forms are a thread that connects her to generations past, and through her metalwork, she gives voice to their enduring presence. Her favorite creations feature textured florals accented with pearls, reflecting themes of matriarchal resilience and beauty.

“Each time I work with glass, metal, or fabric, I reflect on how these materials have always carried our stories. My goal is to share that—through making and passing these teachings forward.” – De-Anne Sack
