Amanda Rose “Mandy” Julian is a Mi’kmaw artist from Wagmatcook, Nova Scotia, whose vibrant acrylic paintings reflect her cultural identity and creative spirit. As a self-taught painter, Mandy finds joy in transforming blank canvases into expressive works that celebrate Mi’kmaw life, tribal designs, and the natural world. Her process begins with hand-drawn designs that evolve into acrylic compositions, often featuring animals and spiritual symbolism.
Mandy’s artwork can be found in galleries across Nova Scotia, including Friends United Gallery, the Millbrook Cultural and Heritage Centre, Wagmatcook Cultural & Heritage Centre, and Membertou Heritage Park. Whether creating in her spare time or preparing work for display, Mandy’s commitment to Mi’kmaw representation through art is evident in every piece.
A Mi’kmaw language speaker and learner, Mandy also participates in community events and powwows, drawing inspiration from the cultural gatherings that shape and sustain Mi’kmaw identity. Her work invites viewers to experience the spirit, colour, and symbolism that define Mi’kmaw creativity.
“I like to draw my paintings and then paint them with acrylic on canvas—Native animals, tribal art.” – Mandy Julian
