Eliza Gould is a Mi’kmaw language speaker, artisan, and cultural knowledge sharer with a deep connection to her traditions. Growing up, Eliza learned to play waltes from her grandmother, a skill she now passes on to others as a way of keeping Mi’kmaw games and stories alive. Her passion for cultural preservation extends to her work in prayers, storytelling, and treaty knowledge.
An accomplished beader, Eliza creates and sells intricate beadwork that reflects her Mi’kmaw heritage. Each piece embodies the skills and traditions passed down through generations, and her designs celebrate the resilience and beauty of her culture.
In addition to her artistry, Eliza is experienced in land-based practices such as hunting, fishing, harvesting, and medicine preparation, grounding her work in the teachings of her ancestors. Her ability to balance artistic expression with cultural knowledge makes her a vital contributor to the preservation and celebration of Mi’kmaw traditions.
“My grandmother taught me waltes when I was just a little girl. It’s a tradition that connects us to our ancestors and to each other.” – Eliza
