Guided by the Seven Sacred Teachings, Wanda Westhaver infuses every creation with respect, care, and good intentions. A proud Mi’kmaw from Wasoqopa’q, she is known for her intricate beadwork — from earrings adorned with sweetgrass to medicine pouches, moccasin vamps, drum bags, and hair ties. She also sews ribbon skirts and shirts, and has recently begun creating regalia such as jingle dresses and fancy shawls. Wanda’s work reflects both tradition and her own creative innovations, making each piece unique.
Her artistry extends beyond beading to include leather crafts, tufting with caribou hair, and sewing. Some of her most popular creations have been Christmas ornaments depicting the Seven Sacred Teachings. Wanda shares her work online through her Facebook page, at craft markets, and in retail spaces such as Sacred Arts in Fredericton, New Brunswick. Wherever her work is found, she ensures it is made with the best intentions, smudging regularly to keep negative energy from being passed into her creations.
Wanda is mindful that not all techniques she uses, such as tufting, are historically Mi’kmaw. She embraces learning from multiple sources, sourcing materials from both Indigenous and non-Indigenous suppliers while prioritizing Indigenous businesses when possible. Her approach blends Traditional Knowledge with contemporary skills, ensuring her craft both honours her heritage and evolves with her own creative journey.
“Everything I make is created with good intentions, guided by the Seven Sacred Teachings. I want the people who receive my work to feel the respect, care, and positive energy that went into it.” — Wanda Westhaver
