Mary Helen Pierro is a respected Mi’kmaw language speaker, educator, and artisan based in Wagmatcook, Nova Scotia. Through hands-on workshops and cultural teachings, Mary Helen shares the wisdom of her ancestors and uplifts the next generation with skills, stories, and healing traditions rooted in Mi’kmaw ways of knowing.
As a Host and Maker, she leads school-based workshops in dreamcatcher making, ribbon skirt and shirt sewing, and crafting of medicine pouches. To Mary Helen, these sessions are powerful acts of cultural preservation and pride. Her work is grounded in the belief that every stitch, bead, and story carries the strength and resilience of her people.
With a background in reconciliation training and support for Residential School Survivors, Mary Helen also brings a deep understanding of Mi’kmaw history and healing to her teachings. She offers insight through symposiums, courthouse presentations, and community dialogues—all delivered with care and cultural integrity.
“Seeing my work reflected through others, especially when students finish their own ribbon skirts or medicine pouches, fills me with pride.” – Mary Helen
