Leonard Paul

Creating visual stories rooted in Mi’kmaw culture and teaching art through exhibitions, workshops, and mentorship.

Leonard Paul is an internationally acclaimed Mi’kmaw artist, master watercolourist, illustrator, and intaglio printmaker. With over 40 years of experience, Leonard has earned national recognition for his contributions to Indigenous art, including the prestigious Governor General’s Medal of Canada and the 2025 Artist of the Year Award. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design and was recently awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Humanities from Acadia University during Convocation 2024. His classical training and lifelong commitment to the arts have led to exhibitions, mentorships, and teaching opportunities that inspire new generations of Indigenous artists. As the founder of Fox Trail Editions, he works both independently and collaboratively to bring forward Mi’kmaw stories in visual form.

Leonard believes that art is an everyday language—an inherent part of Mi’kmaw life and culture. His illustrations and fine art draw from ancestral knowledge, Treaty histories, and traditional practices, creating works that are both beautiful and deeply meaningful. As an Elected Member of the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolour, Leonard is known for his distinctive approach to visual storytelling that honours both Indigenous Knowledge Systems and Eurocentric techniques. Beyond his studio, Leonard is a dedicated mentor, teaching visual storytelling and creative techniques through workshops, one-on-one mentorship, and virtual learning.

Leonard recently began shifting his practice toward portrait painting as part of his evolving art business, while continuing to support the Mi’kmaw cultural resurgence through exhibitions and teaching. In recognition of his lifetime achievements, he has also been nominated for the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Mi’kmaq Tourism Organization of Nova Scotia.

“Visual art is inherent in our everyday life. It’s how we share, how we remember, and how we pass on knowledge.” – Leonard
