Debbie Wray Nickerson is a self-taught Mi’kmaw artist whose lifelong commitment to traditional beadwork and craft reflects both resilience and creativity. In an era before the internet and without access to teachers, Debbie taught herself multiple beading techniques—from applique and loom to Huichol—and developed her own designs and tools along the way. Today, she continues to create intricate beadwork while also teaching others to preserve these skills for future generations.
In addition to her work with beads, Debbie practices and teaches traditional skills including brain tanning leather, leatherwork, and sewing items such as feather carriers and ribbon skirts. Her work is deeply informed by Mi’kmaw land-based practices and ceremonies, and she integrates these values into every aspect of her creative process.
By mentoring others in these traditional arts, Debbie ensures that cultural knowledge is passed on with care and intention. Her dedication to community learning and her artistry make her a respected cultural contributor within Mi’kma’ki.
“I enjoy teaching others to do the things I do in order to make sure the skills are not lost.” – Debbie
