Darrell Bernard is a respected Mi’kmaw cultural educator and performer from Membertou, Nova Scotia. As a founding member of the Sons of Membertou drum group, since 1993 Darrell has been instrumental in reviving and sharing traditional Mi’kmaw songs, drumming, and storytelling through performances, workshops, and public speaking.
In 2025, the seminal album Wapnaʾkik: The People of the Dawn, originally released in 1995, was remastered and reissued by Smithsonian Folkways. Darrell curated the release and authored the liner notes, highlighting its cultural significance in Mi’kmaw resurgence and language revitalization.
Darrell is also active in lifting the name Mukla’qatik (Kellys Mountain) as a cultural and tourism site—promoting its original Mi’kmaw name and heritage. He offers opening prayers, storytelling, and educational facilitation for events and ceremonies, and is available for performances and public speaking.
“We began with a drum given by our Elders—to bring back songs and language. Now our music builds bridges: between generations, cultures, and land.” – Darrell Bernard
