IN MEMORY OF:
Becky Julian was a respected Mi’kmaw Elder and community leader from Sipekne’katik First Nation. A fluent Mi’kmaw speaker and Residential School survivor, Becky dedicated her life to preserving and promoting Mi’kmaw culture, language, and traditions.
Born in Old Town on Indian Brook Reserve, Becky’s journey was marked by resilience, determination, and success. From an early age, she immersed herself in the knowledge shared by community Elders, learning traditional skills such as basket making, quillwork, beading, and creating crepe paper flowers. Her connection to her heritage deepened as she raised her family of eight children while actively contributing to her community.
After her youngest child started school, Becky pursued her passion for teaching and cultural preservation. She became a certified linguist in 1984 and has since taught the Mi’kmaw language to students across Nova Scotia. Her work as a teacher at L’nu Sipuk Kina’moukoum has inspired generations of students to embrace their language and culture.
Becky’s artistry extends to her crafts, where she created exquisite wooden roses, baskets, and beaded items. Her efforts have been recognized through numerous accolades, including the Grand Chief Donald Marshall Senior Memorial Elder Award and an honorary doctorate from Cape Breton University.
Becky Julian’s life exemplifies the importance of cultural resilience and the power of knowledge-sharing. Through her teachings, crafts, and leadership, she continues to uplift and preserve Mi’kmaw traditions for future generations.
“The essence of being Mi’kmaq is infused into everything that I do.” – Becky
