About Mi'kmawitasik
Our Journey to Cultural Authenticity
Mi’kmawitasik is more than a certification—it’s a movement born from deep community engagement, cultural reflection, and a commitment to preserving and sharing Mi’kmaw heritage with integrity.
Rooted in Community Wisdom
2021
The journey began with extensive consultations across Nova Scotia, where Elders, Knowledge Keepers, artists, and community members gathered to discuss the essence of Mi’kmaw cultural tourism. These dialogues emphasized the importance of distinguishing between sacred traditions meant to remain within the community and cultural expressions appropriate for sharing with the world. This foundational work led to the development of the Authentic Mi’kmaw Cultural Tourism Guidelines, ensuring that cultural tourism initiatives are led by Mi’kmaw and reflect genuine Mi’kmaw experiences.
Protecting Our Cultural Expressions
2022
Recognizing the need to safeguard Mi’kmaw art, stories, and traditions from misappropriation, the community embarked on an intellectual property (IP) journey. Collaborating with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), efforts were made to understand and implement IP rights that align with Mi’kmaw values. This partnership aimed to address challenges related to collective ownership and the protection of traditional knowledge, ensuring that Mi’kmaw cultural expressions remain under Mi’kmaw control.
The Birth of Mi’kmawitasik
2025
Through these combined efforts, Mi’kmawitasik: Mi’kmaw Made was established—a cultural trademark developed in collaboration with WIPO and endorsed by the Assembly of Nova Scotia Mi’kmaw Chiefs. This initiative provides a certification for Mi’kmaw artisans and cultural tourism hosts, signifying that their products and experiences are authentically Mi’kmaq. Members receive a certificate of authenticity, marketing materials, and a profile on mikmawitasik.ca, connecting them with audiences seeking genuine Mi’kmaw cultural experiences.

A Continuing Journey
2025
Mi’kmawitasik represents a significant step in reclaiming and celebrating Mi’kmaw culture. It empowers community members to share their heritage on their terms, fosters economic opportunities, and educates visitors about the rich traditions of the Mi’kmaq. As the journey continues, Mi’kmawitasik stands as a testament to the resilience and vibrancy of Mi’kmaw culture, ensuring its preservation for generations to come.
